Come join in the most delicious event of the year. The 2012 Freeport Community Services Chowdah Challenge will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at the L.L.Bean Discovery Park. Each year local restaurants generously donate their traditional and gourmet clam and seafood chowders to benefit Freeport Community Services programs.
For $10, participants have a chance to taste the best chowders in Freeport and vote for their favorites. Last year’s winners were Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen & Topside Tavern, 1912 Cafe and The Lobster Cooker. All proceeds go to the FCS Food Pantry and fuel fund.
The FCS Summer Camp Scholarship program will be selling homemade pies with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, too.
Last year’s 18th Chowdah Challenge raised just over $3,000 and awarded trophies for two categories: Best Clam Chowder and Best Seafood Chowder.
Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen and Topside Tavern won first prize for the Best Clam Chowder and 1912 Cafe won first prize for their Seafood Chowder.
The Lobster Cooker won a prize for the Best Alternative Chowder, an annual favorite.
The money raised will benefit Freeport Community Services.
Many slices of homemade apple pie served à la mode with vanilla ice cream donated by Ben and Jerry’s were also sold, to raise money for the Freeport Community Center Summer Camp Scholarship program.
