WINDHAM – Back in early January, the Gorham Rams hosted a boys and girls varsity doubleheader with the Windham Eagles, and proved to be the rude hosts, winning both contests.
Tuesday night, almost a month later, it was the Eagles turn to play host, with slightly different outcomes.
In the opener, the Gorham girls (10-7) again triumphed, 47-33, with three players in double figures. The first half was tight, with Gorham holding just a one-point lead at the end of each quarter.
Kristin Ross, the Rams’ D-1-bound standout, got things started with seven first-quarter points. She finished with 12. Guard Erin Smith had four points in each of the first two quarters. She would finish with 10.
After halftime, Lexi Merrifield came out of the locker room on fire, scoring nine points and pushing Gorham to a 35-24 lead after three quarters. She would lead all scorers with 13 points.
The Eagles (9-8) were led by by junior forward Marissa Ulmer, who scored all her 11 points in the second half. Lonnie Staten added nine points, and Sam Frost scored six on two 3-point shots.
In the boys contest, it was the Eagles who played rude host this time, winning 58-44 in a game that was never really in doubt after a slow-starting first quarter. The Eagles played solidly, their defense slowing the Rams’ attack and coming up with frequent turnovers, and scoring their points when they had the chance.
Three players scored in double figures for the Eagles (7-10). Junior guard Spencer Hodge led all scorers with 15 points, including a couple of treys. Dylan Weisser scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Tom McGowan added 13 points.
The Rams (6-11) were led by senior guard Alex Owens with 11 points, including two 3-point shots. Corey Nadeau came off the bench to score nine points, all in the second half.
Corey Nadeau’s (23) tenacious defense yields a positive result for Gorham, a Windham turnover in their offensive end. Nadeau came off the bench to score nine second half points.
Windham’s Dylan Weisser controls the ball in the second half. Weisser finished with 14 points.
Windham’s Tom McGowan (10) floats a high shot over Gorham’s Dan Holmes (33) for two points and a 28-16 lead early in the third quarter. McGowan finished with 13 points.
