Saturday, March 1: The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth TRIAD will be hosting an AARP Smart Driver Class for senior citizens. Upon completion, the senior is eligible for a reduction on their car insurance. If a senior has taken the class more than three years ago, they need to take the class again. The cost is $15 for AARP members (must bring AARP membership card) and $20 for nonmembers. The class size will be limited to 20 students. The date for the class is March 1 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. It will be held at The Cape Elizabeth Fire Department Training Room at 2 Jordan Way. March 1: The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church will host a public supper from 4:30-6 p.m. featuring casseroles, beans, salads, breads and pies. The charge will be $8 for adults, $5 for children and $20 for families (2 adults and children). Take-out will be available. The church is located at 280 Ocean House Road.

March 1: Scarborough Councilor Jean-Marie Caterina is holding a Councilor Open House at Dunstan Fire Station from 10 a.m. until noon for constituents to drop by and chat. There will be coffee and snacks. Bring the kids to see the fire trucks and other equipment.

Through March 2: Scarborough High School presents “Jack and the Ruffians” Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Scarborough High School Auditorium, 11 Municipal Drive. Donations appreciated at the door.

Tuesday, March 4: All parents who have a child who is 5 or turning 5 on or before Oct. 15, 2014 are invited to a short overview of Scarborough’s kindergarten program. The information session takes place 6-7 p.m. in the Scarborough High School Auditorium. Snow date is March 5. Registration paperwork may be picked up at this time, and screening appointments will be made promptly following the meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, paperwork and screening appointments may be made by calling Hope Taggart at Pleasant Hill School after March 4: 730-5250.

Wednesday, March 5: The monthly meeting of the Scarborough Historical Society will be held at 7:30 p.m. at 647 U.S. Route 1 (adjacent to the Dunstan Fire Station). A brief business meeting is held and followed by a presentation. All monthly meetings are free to members of the public. However, donations are always welcomed. The presentation is about one hour. Presenter Bruce Thurlow will describe the incredible role played by the people of Scarborough during the Civil War. A view of the home front (an actual statement written at the time) will be shared.

March 5-April 9: A Grief Support Group will be held Wednesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. March 5 through April 9 at VNA Home Health Hospice, 50 Foden Road, in South Portland. This will be a closed group (same group of people meeting for the six sessions) that works best if you are able to attend all sessions. March 7-28: A special 20-hour volunteer training will prepare you to be part of the VNA Home Health Hospice team bringing comfort to individuals and families facing a terminal illness. Training takes place four Fridays, March 7, 14, 21, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and March 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at VNA Home Health Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland. Saturday, March 8: Stewart P. Morrill American Legion Post 35 in South Portland, is hosting a corned beef supper 4:30-6:30 p.m. Corned beef, cabbage, vegetables, deserts, coffee, tea, punch. Adults $10. Children 3 to 12 years old $3. Post 35 is at 413 Broadway, South Portland.
