The Windham Town Council, in a 5-1 vote, approved the sale of Gambo Fields at Soccer Drive to the Windham Youth Soccer Association at Tuesday’s meeting.
The town purchased the fields from the Portland Water District earlier this year, after decades of leasing the fields. The youth soccer association has maintained, improved and played the fields for nearly 30 years.
The soccer association offered $80,000 for the fields, the same amount the council paid to the Portland Water District to take ownership.
Councilor Tim Nangle, although ultimately supporting the measure, expressed concern that the sale would limit access to the fields for other town programs. The terms of the sale are yet to be negotiated, although practice times for other youth sports associations and a town-owned boat launch have been discussed.
Councilor David Nadeau opposed the measure because, he said, he “can’t sell a town asset.”
Windham Youth Soccer players run at Gambo Fields off of River Road in Windham. The soccer association is set to take ownership of the fields mid-summer.
