SACO – The Windham girls, in a rematch of post-season action from last year, traveled to Thornton Academy on Thursday, June 1. There, the Eagles’ second-doubles outfit pulled out a win over their Trojans hosts, but that one W wouldn’t be enough to secure Windham an overall victory, and Thornton emerged triumphant in the end, 4-1.
At first singles, Trojan Eva Sachs defeated Eagle Paige Laferriere 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Emma Nassif (TA) defeated Gabby Smith (Windham) 6-0, 6-1. And at third singles, Brianna Paul (TA) topped Blanca Sturm (Windham) 6-1, 6-2.
Over on the first doubles court, Trojans Cordelia Perry and Katie Shedd triumphed over Anna Cancelarich and Delia Inman 6-3, 6-2. Finally, at second doubles, Windham pulled out a W: Eagles Moltioni and Clark topped Trojans Nguyen and Liu 6-2, 6-1.
“My girls did not play their best versus TA,” said Windham head coach Jenna Willey. Still, Willey also noticed some moments of excellence in and around the Eagles’ missteps against the Trojans. “Blanca was painting the lines with her ground strokes,” Willey said. “Gabby was hitting with pace. Paige rallied with one of the top players in the State. And first doubles battled hard and showed their ability to compete with any team, while second doubles showed their polished play to finish the season with a win!”
“Windham had a good season,” Willey said. “[The girls] were competitive with every match, and showed how much they improved over the course of the season.”
Windham retires till 2018 at 8-6, having entered the playoffs at 7-5 and dropped Bonny Eagle in the prelims.
