Lakers looking to get back to the big game

The Lake Region girls’ basketball team has been oh so close to the ultimate prize the last two years having won the Western Maine title both years. This season they are hoping to get back to the big game and this time, win it.

The Lakers went a long way toward getting to the state finals by securing the No. 1 seed for the tournament. Their 16-2 record was good enough to put them atop the Heal Point Standings, just ahead of number two Falmouth.

That’s not to say things were easy for the Lakers this season. They had to do without ZZ Leighton, Kim Rivet and Courtney McClean, who graduated last year. The Lakers were left with just one starter from a year ago. But the team quickly pulled together and did what the Lakers do best: win.

The Lakers opened the season 6-0 before dropping their first game to Wells. Two games later they lost to Greely. Since then they have reeled off nine straight wins to end the regular season and earn their third-straight top seed for the tourney.

They are scheduled to open their quest for a state title Tuesday at the Portland Expo against the winner of the Lisbon versus Wells game at 8:30 p.m.
