NEW GLOUCESTER – A previously uncontested race to replace Laura Sturgis on the New Gloucester Selectboard has added a last-minute write-in candidate.

Sturgis is not running again, and New Gloucester native Joe Davis is the only candidate on the ballot for her seat. However, Doug McAtee is now mounting a write-in campaign.

Davis, who works two jobs and is a Free Mason and Cub Scout leader, has no previous political experience and says he would do plenty of learning and listening as a member of the selectboard. McAtee, who is a self-employed excavating contractor and grew up in Gray for 20 years before moving to New Gloucester, also has no previous political experience.

Davis and McAtee both spoke with the Lakes Region Weekly about their background and vision for the town.
