Scarborough WinterFest set for Saturday

Scarborough Community Services will hold its 21st annual WinterFest Saturday, Jan. 16, with an array of activities at the ice rink, fields and the Bessworth Child Care Building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities include snow golf, a Belly Buster contest, Score-O, cardboard sled races, a snow sculpture contest, turkey bowling and more.

New this year, sponsored by Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, will be dog sled rides at a location to be determined. Sled rides will be held throughout the day and are free.

There will also be a food drive from noon to 4 p.m. Community Services will be collecting canned and boxed food items to be donated to the local food pantry. Event organizers are asking families to bring at least one item per person if they come to the free WinterFest.

A WinterFest raffle will be held in conjuction with the event. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5, or $10 for an arm’s length. Prizes include food deals, hotel stays and many gift certificates from area businesses. Winners will be announced every half hour.

Events include a free-throw competition in Wentworth Gym at 11:30 a.m., snow golf at noon, the Belly Buster contest at 12:15 p.m. at the upper ice rink, a jump rope competition at 12:30 p.m. in the Wentworth band room, slalom skating at the lower ice rink at 12:30 p.m., cardboard sled races at the high school hill at 1 p.m., the Score-O competition at the upper ice rink at 1:15 p.m., and backward skating at the lower ice rink at 1:15 p.m.

WinterFest also features a snow sculpture contest (1:30 p.m. next to the ice rink), speed skating (2 p.m. at the lower ice rink), the ice cube hunt for students pre-K through second grade (basketball court at 2 p.m.), turkey bowling (upper ice rink at 2:15 p.m.), an obstacle course (lower ice rink at 2:45 p.m.), and the crowning of the King and Queen at 4 p.m., with judging starting at 3.
