Teen dies in Buxton crash

Bonny Eagle High School student Jeff Letellier died in a two-car crash last Wednesday afternoon in Buxton.

Officer Kyle A. Kassa of the Buxton Police Department said on Thursday that Letellier, 17, was a passenger in one of the vehicles that collided. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were transported to a hospital.

The accident occurred where the Mary Jane and Warren roads intersect with Route 112.

Letellier was in a green Pontiac Sunbird driven by another Bonny Eagle High School student, Anthony Gammon, 18, of Limington. They were traveling north on Mary Jane Road, and Gammon went through the stop sign posted at the road’s intersection with Route 112.

They collided with the driver’s side of a green Chevy S10 driven by Keith Tufts, 18, of Hiram, with a passenger, Eva Cox, 18, of Limerick. The Chevy was traveling west on Route 112.

Gammon’s car came to rest in the woods, and Tuft’s car wound up on its side against several trees.

Kassa, the lead investigator of the accident, said speed appeared to be a factor. “There’s no reason to believe that alcohol was involved,” Kassa said.

A third car, a red Chevy S10, driven by Robert Malone, 17, of Limington had been following Gammon’s car on the Mary Jane Road. Malone, also a Bonny Eagle student, was able to stop at the intersection, avoiding the collision.

Tufts and Cox were in serious condition Thursday morning, according to Buxton police. Gammon suffered leg injuries, and Malone was unhurt.

Kassa said the accident remained under investigation. He said there were no charges at this point.

State Police and deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department were assisting Kassa in the investigation. The investigation and reconstruction of the accident blocked Route 112 to traffic Wednesday afternoon.

Buxton Police Chief Jody Thomas was also at the scene, and Buxton Police Officer Philip Viola was the first on the scene.
