Library Friends to meet

Friends of the Walker Memorial Library will hold its first meeting of the 2017-18 season from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.

The group will be planning for its fall potluck, game nights and raffle basketmaking fundraisers, along with planning for the library’s Holiday Open House in December.

All ages are welcome to attend the meeting, on the second floor of the library. Call 854-0630 for more information.

Poetry series continues

Lowry’s Lodge Poetry series continues at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Continuum for Creativity, 863 Main St., Westbrook.

Poets Claire Hersom and Jim Donnelly will read. Light refreshments will be served during intermission. The suggested donation is $4.

WHS, pantry food drive

Three community groups are conducting a food drive to restock shelves at Westbrook High School and Westbrook Food Pantry.

Canned goods and non-perishable foods can be taken to the Westbrook Hannaford parking lot 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Monetary donations can be sent to Westbrook High School, 125 Stroudwater St.,  or Westbrook Community Pantry, 426 Bridge St. Check memo fields should include “food pantry.”

Food drive sponsors are Westbrook Kiwanis, Downtown Westbrook Coalition and Westbrook-Gorham Rotary.

Grief support group

A six-week grief support group is forming for Thursdays beginning Sept. 14 and continuing through Oct. 26.

The group will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. The same people will meet in each of the sessions.

Free haircut for donors

The American Red Cross and Sports Clips Haircuts are teaming up in a September drive.

Blood and platelet donors in September will receive a coupon by email for a free haircut.

Blood donation opportunities include one in Westbrook set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Olympia Sports, 5 Bradley Drive.

Donors are urged to make an appointment to donate using the free Blood Donor App, online at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
