Scam

The Westbrook Police Department was investigating several reports of a serious phone scam this week, in which the suspect calls males and tells them that their wife or girlfriend is being held hostage, demanding money for their safe return.

According to a press release issued Monday by Capt. Steven Goldberg, the suspect tells the males that if they call the police, their wife or girlfriend will be shot. Police said in all of the calls, the suspect was a male and had a Hispanic accent.

“The investigation has revealed that this case appears to be a scam,” the release states. “The victims have made contact with the police and are safe and were never being held hostage or threatened. The investigation into this matter continues, and anyone with information should contact their local law enforcement agency. Should anyone receive a similar call, please contact their local law enforcement agency and do not fall victim to the scam by wiring them money.”
