Heroin initiative coordinator hired

Westbrook resident Shelby Briggs has been selected as the first coordinator for the Community Approach to Stopping Heroin (CASH) initiative.

According to a police press release, Briggs began on Monday, July 11. The position is a 25-hour-per-week assignment with duties focused on coordinating all meetings, events and activities related to the initiative, which was formed in 2015 in response to a growing opiate crisis in the Westbrook and Greater Portland areas.

The release describes Briggs as having more than 20 years of “extensive training and experience in helping people who have substance use disorders.”

She began volunteering with the group when it was first formed, and was previously employed with Portland’s Public Health Department as a specialist in overdose and substance use prevention. She also holds a certification in alcohol and drug counseling and a certification as a substance use prevention specialist.

“We are excited to have Shelby officially join the city of Westbrook’s and the police department’s team,” said Chief Janine Roberts in the press release. “We are depending on her enthusiasm and dedication to our neighbors who struggle with substance use disorders to help us start to turn the tide on the opiate epidemic our community is facing.”

Briggs will work to establish and supervise a volunteer responders’ program, develop a marketing program for the initiative and work to develop local recovery and treatment resources in Westbrook.
