GARDINER – The Westbrook wrestling team had a strong showing at Saturday’s Tiger Tournament in Gardiner, finishing third overall in the team competition and bringing home a couple of first-place individual finishes as well.
Cony took first place in the team standings with 176.5 points. Mt. Blue was a very close second with 173 points and the Blazes were third with 104. Erskine Academy was right behind the Blazes in fourth place with 103 points and host Gardiner was fifth with 92.
Graham Strondak continued his strong season on the mat for Westbrook, winning the 170-pound division with a 7-6 decision over Mt. Blue’s Caleb Farrington. Strondak started the day with a win over Mt. Blue’s Dalton Black, pinning him at the 1:16 point of the match. Next, Strondak took on Monmouth Academy’s Jake Powers in the second match of the day and beat him with a 6-1 decision, setting up the championship bout with Farrington.
The Blue Blazes also got a win at 285 pounds, as Devon Grant beat MCI’s Jacob McGowan 3-1 in overtime in the championship match. Grant’s path to the final started with a bye in the first round. In the second round, he was paired with Erskine Academy’s Tyler Davis, and Grant had little trouble with Davis, pinning him in 1:11, moving him into the finals against McGowan.
Besides the wins from Grant and Strondak, Westbrook also got strong performances from: Andrew Rogers, who was second at 106 pounds; Max Storm, who was second at 126 pounds; Cal Randall, who was third at 145 pounds; Scott Kirkpatrick, who was fourth at 138 pounds and Brandon Conley, who was fourth at 145 pounds.
