Wrestling: Westbrook Invitational kicks off season for more than a dozen teams

Tyler Fitz of Bonny Eagle drops a Messalonskee Eagle.

WESTBROOK—The Blazes wrestling squad hosted their annual Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 9, and while none of the team won through their respective weight bracket to ultimately claim first place, Ryan Shackley finished second at 132, Jared Grant and Henri Kuntz finished third at 152 and 160 (respectively), and Gabby Taylor and Nicco Pappalardo finished fourth at 113 and 120 (again, respectively).

“I was pleased with the effort from the whole team on Saturday,” Westbrook/Gorham head coach John Nicholas said. “The kids came out aggressive and fought right until the very end. We finished the day with five medals—and that was without one of our top wrestlers. Shackley making it to the finals his senior year was exciting, too. This is a great start to the season and we will look to build from here.”

Also of local note: The Bonny Eagle contingent likewise fared well, with Colby Frost taking second at 106, Caleb Frost taking second at 138, Tyler Fitz taking third at 145 and Anthony Mason taking fourth at 132.

Marshwood claimed the team crown, with 139 points on fourth first-place and three second-place finishes. Westbrook/Gorham (a handful of Gorhamites wrestle as Blazes) ended the day just in the middle of the pack, in eighth with 62 points, while Bonny Eagle followed closely in ninth, with 58.5 points.
